an open competition for a university building,
a proposal to create the maximum possible volume within the minimum possible area. the project brief asked for a 15,000m2 study and general resource building that should allow for up to 50% future expansion on the same site. specialist functions (library, meeting rooms, auditoria and kitchens) are clustered into four vertical towers. The general floorplate, with communal learning and study spaces are treated as a corridor free street of adaptable accommodation which surrounds and connects the cluster towers. each cluster contains vertical circulation and an open vertical garden patio which drives the primary environmental strategy. future expansion is planned within the proposed first phase volume. the stepped section allows for the phased insertion of new floors whilst allowing for continual operation of the building and the vertical clusters. the double height floorplates can be densified with the insertion of 5 intermediate floors, the buildings structure and facade is designed to both accommodate the generous original volume and to allow for future additions |
